My son is a video game addict. If I let him he would not move from the computer or the game cube ALL DAY! He doesn't really enjoy "book learning". If I sit down to read a book he'll go along with it for a short time, but he really doesn't want to be there. So I went ahead and signed us up for the online learning program TIME4Learning. He's doing it without any complaints! He ASKS to play "those school games" on the computer! So I'm trying to decide if it's a great thing, or am I just coddeling his electronics habit? He still has to work on motor skill by doing other things (handwriting practice etc) but he's getting so many language arts and math concepts through this program. What is your opinion? Is it good or bad? Edie

It looks like interactive lessons to me, more than video games. If it is working for him, I say keep at it, as long as he retains the information. I had my daughter doing Spelling Time last year, and she loved it. However, she treated it as a video game (understandably. It was fun, and a fun game always followed the lesson), and was not retaining spelling words, so I pulled the plug. Watch for retention, and go from there. If he is just using it as a video game and NOT remembering after a while, you might reconsider. If it turns out that he learns best through the colorful, interactive sessions, then you will have hit the motherload for your son! :D |
