The late 15th Century painter received many commissions for altarpieces, etc., most notably from the Knights of St. John who were still fighting the Turks in an effort to hold Rhodes. Geertgen's composition and progress in his use of color is noteworthy. "He burst through the stereotyped framework of representation and tried, sometimes by even depicting figures in an unexepcted way, to give fresh meaning to conventional forms."
