Absolutely one of the best Western history books. Contains beautiful renderings of black and white photos, sketches, drawings. Includes spectacular sculptures, lithographs and watercolors. This book gathers much of its' information from the Thomas Gilcrease Institute of American History and art in Tulsa, OK. The book has almost 300 plates, 134 in full color. Every great name in Western art is richly represented -22 paintings and bronzes by Remington, 20 by Russell, eleven paintings by Miller, 9 by Moran, 24 paintings, studies and sketches by Catlin, 23 by Leigh, 4 by Schreyvogels, and 7 Bodmers - and scores of remarkable works by lesser known artists. Muleskinners, troopers and Pony Express riders, the cattlemen, and wagon trains, riverboat men, traders, mountain men, roustabouts, bronc riders, settlers, gamblers, gold rushers all are included in this book and are made to practically jump off the pages and into reality. This is unquestioningly the most lavish, beautiful, and important single volume ever published of the art of the old west.
