Atta is an involving take on the life-in-miniature theme, taking place entirely in a few square feet of abandoned farmland. The protagonist finds himself in a strange forbidding jungle, facing strange alien creatures with tight caste structures. He befriends one of these creatures, learns its language, defends a shelter, and shares resources and skills before realizing where he is. Soon he is integrated into ant society as a warrior, but he and his early companion have other ideas... Bellamy inflates insect behaviour into a full-fledged, but socially limited, culture of Roman proportions. Anthills become massive metropoles, tin foil becomes body armor, and beast-riding a significant combat advantage; and the notion of individuality becomes a dangerous revolutionary idea.
