A GOOD zombie tale is hard to find. This is one of the better ones.

Not sure why this has such a high rating, because I thought it was pretty terrible. Essentially a zombie apocalypse book following three survivors over the two weeks after it happened. The characters are all pretty one dimensional: Guy 1 is grieving over the loss of his wife and child, Guy 2 is kind of a loner who 'takes charge', Girl is a medical student - these are their defining characteristics and we don't really learn much else about them. They bicker constantly, to the point of making each and every character unlikeable.
And boy, are they dumb. Almost all the drama in the book comes from them making terrible decisions. Example: 5 zombies in the parking lot of a grocery store? Let's avoid them by... ramming our van though the glass doors of the store! Surely *that* won't draw the zombies who are drawn by loud noises... and then of course the three 'heroes' are promptly swamped by dozens of zombies. What's worse is this little bit of plot device is used twice in the book.
After reading this, it's hard to believe that this book got the following that the introduction claims had when it was published in totality for free on the Internet (how come I never heard of it, then?). It's not surprising at all that it took 10 years to be published, though.
One of the reviews on the cover calls it one of the best/scariest survival horror stories since Matheson's I Am Legend. Yeah, I'm going to have to disagree. Not only that, the book isn't particularily scary, intense, or innovative (you can see every 'twist' coming a mile away), but all the characters will annoy you and leave your eyes rolling. At least it was a quick read.

Truly just an OK book. The character's are not well developed and well, kind of dumb. At first the rising dead aren't dangerous, but everyone is freaking out about going outside. Umm...go get supplies! Some of the characters are just plain jerks. The two main male characters fight without reason like 10 and 13 year old brothers and it doesn't add to the story at all. Just thrown in for conflict I guess. It ended up just being irritating. The seems almost like a young adult book, but there are no young characters so it's not in that category.

I was pretty disappointed in this book. I read hater and really enjoyed it. This was a very slow zombie story. Nothing really made it stick out. I didn't love the characters at all. Is this a realistic story- yes it probably is. But I like to root for a good character to overcome stuff.
I like zombies. I like post apocalyptic settings. I thought I would like this book. I did not. I found the characters motives and actions really hard to comprehend.
This book only took me a few days to read! It's an easy read but it kept my attention the whole time. I'm a sucker for a good zombie tale! I do not recommend the movie though.
After reading the "Rot & Ruin" series books by Newberry I wanted some more so I went looking. I came across this book and it is a bit of a different time period of the same old zombie situation. This books is more of the day of and the days following the initial spread/epidimic situation. I wanted more at the end because it left it kind of open so I am not sure if there is expected to be another book or not but I would have loved to see what happen to the characters.
A refreshing take on zombie stories! Tells the story though eyes of various "plauge" surviviors. Gives a new twist to the undead and how they act. Great read!
I really enjoyed this book. It is much different than many zombie books but still falls squarely in the genre. I've read all four books (the original trilogy and the compilation) and they are all well worth the read! You really grow to care about the characters and the author really makes you feel the emotions of the people trapped in this new nightmare world!
A zombie book... that never actually uses the word zombie. People everywhere have suddenly dropped dead. Few survivors know nothing of what is happening around them but they know they need to survive. But how? And where? And do plans change when suddenly, the dead bodies begin to walk? I didn't realize this was part of a series so I was shocked at the cliffhanger ending. I tore through this book in 2 days and I'm itching for more.
My copy of the book did contain several spelling and grammar mistakes which somehow snuck past editors, but as frustrating as it is, it didn't take away from the story.
