It's not an easy book to characterize: not really horror or mystery, almost a gothic but not quite. Whatever the category, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters are well-drawn if definitely off-center, the pace picks up speed as the novel progresses, and I found myself reluctant to put it down.

Book took a while to really get into it... but give it a chance and keep reading and it does get better!

I found this book very hard to get into. I did not care for the main character and by the end of the book I still did not.

As the book progressed and she researched the strange happenings in her village, the story draws you in. The writing is not great but it is very descriptive so that you can picture yourself there. By 250 pages in, I decided I had to finish. It gives you many suspects and there are lots of twists. It keeps you guessing till the end.

Bolton is a wonderful writer and this book is not exception. The story is engrossing and the characters great. Be warned though that a great deal of the plot has to do with snakes--biting people, infesting houses, being studied and cataloged. If you don't like snakes this may not be for you.

Another page-turner from Bolton. The lady seems to excel in mildly gothic plots, that are genuinely creepy; good local color and a satisfying ending.
