This book was written by a woman author in the late 19th century. It gives insight into the status of women and the culture they lived in located in New Orleans and St. Louis. People were scandalized by her views and criticized her work. She was before her time. The Awakening was a little melodramatic but portrayed the early beginnings of the women's movement for more freedom. The short stories were good.

I read this book for my honor's class and, while I didn't enjoy it, the story is really well written. If you into the old- and I mean old- ways, you will enjoy this book.

I thought this book discussed the issue of a woman's independence in a very through manner. The main character's journey of self discovery and her acceptance of her desire for independence is amazing. I loved reading this book.
