One of the first introductions to feminist literature that I read, but a great read for anyone!

Excellent book for group discussion clubs. Book caused outrage in 1899 because of its heroine forsook her husband and children in order to discover her true self.

Published in 1899, this little materpiece is a thrill to read. It's so beautifully written and so deeply moving. A marvelous read!

A group of short stories written in the 1800's by Kate Chopin. The main story is of a woman in the 1800's who is struggling to discover herself outside the constraints of "polite society." Ten short stories follow, all of them about women moving beyond thier "place." Wonderful writing style and a fascinating look at the time and place.

"The Awakening" is one of my favorite short stories! Here's a chance to read more of her work, too. Kate Chopin was a feisty feminist writer long before the Women's Movement. Good summer reading and also great for students, teachers, or just for an addition to your permanent bookshelf.

In 1899 Kate Chopin shocked the popular taste of the day, outraged morality and destroyed the authors reputation and career.

Great book for high school or college students reading Kate Chopin. Great critical articles for reference.

"Meeting initially with widespread hostile criticism, the novel went out of print for a half a century in [the U.S.] Now widely read, especially in college courses, this novel has established itself as one of a few classic novels written by a woman at the turn of the century...."

Truly a classic of American Literature. A ground-breaking novel of its day that still speaks volumes.

This book has been a touchstone for me for the last 10 years. I first read it in college and didn't give it much thought after completing the required assignment. Years later I picked it up on a whim and it was a totally different literary experience. I have felt exactly like Edna some many times in my adult life. I have read this book over and over to the point of falling apart and still have not tired of it.
