Please post your brilliant and illuminating thoughts about the novel "Aztec" right here....

Does anyone have a copy with the chapters listed in a table of contents?

BTW - Saying you'd like to get your groove on with Aztec's main character is not brilliant, but I suppose it could be considered illuminating. Carry on, Shelley.  :-)

Valli - mine doesn't have a table of contents and the chapters aren't so easy to break up.  Maybe we should just divide the book into 4 sections for the discussion?  Pages 1-250, 251-500, 501-750 and 750+?

I'm about 150 pages in.  It took me a little while to get into it, but I'm there now.  I really like the voice of the main character.  And it certainly is an interesting story so far.  As Shelley put it, we've already touched on incest, human sacrifice, and cannibalism in the first 100 pages!!

Only problem is that depending on what edition everyone has, the page numbers are going to be different.

Erika - I thought about that, but I figured this would get you close (+ or - 20 pages).  Certainly better than holding the entire discussion in 1 posting!  Just throwing spaghetti to the wall to see what sticks - other suggestions are welcome.

Okay, I think I'm about 200 pages in (don't have my copy here at work so I can check for sure).  Are we going to split it up according to sections/pages/whatever?  (Maybe we did, and I haven't looked yet.)  I actually have a question to post and I want to make sure I get it in the right place so as not to spoil anything for anyone!

If you're not about 200 pages in, you may want to stop reading here!

The book certainly is gripping.  And, BTW, Valli, I certainly don't want to get my groove on with Mixtli (how do you pronounce that anyway?), but apparently his sister does!   I'm so ewwwww on that.  I told DH that first sex scene would've been somewhat erotic (I liked the way it was written) but when you realize it's a brother and sister, it ends up being nauseating.  LOL!

Yes, plenty of human sacrifice going on, and let's add girl-on-girl action to the list of fun topics covered, shall we?  ;)  Wow, this book surely does have it all.  One of the reasons I have a hard time putting it down.  What the heck kind of taboo situation is Mixtli going to wind up in next???

BTW, I thought the "rape" of Something Delicate was just so twisted. I mean when you think of the horrible damage it did to her in a way that was so different (and certainly just as devastating if not more so) than the typical "rape."  It was really something to think about.  And, hey, what's up with Jadestone Doll?  She's some piece of work, eh?  Twiiiiiiiiisted!

I got to nearly page 100 last night.  I am able to read it much faster now, I think because I've settled into the prose.  You know how when you first start a book it's kind of slow-going because you're getting used to the writing but then it gets easier?  I'm at that point.  Mixtli just told the story of the Sun Stone.  Still loving it so far.

LOL, Shelley! We all know you'll never leave Uhtred.

As Shelley put it, we've already touched on incest, human sacrifice, and cannibalism in the first 100 pages!!

Those are actually all of the things I look for in good literature. That's how I got stuck in that phase where I was only reading books about shipwrecks, lol. This one is going to be a blast! :-D

I'm going to figure out the chapters tonight and add some new threads tomorrow morning. We might end up doing it like Michelle said with the pages because I'm having a hard time even finding the chapters in my book. It doesn't have each new chapter starting on a fresh page so they are really hard to locate. If anyone has a better copy and feels like they can easily break the book up into about 4 sections, feel free to start the threads and tell us what to do. If not, I'll have something posted for us tomorrow morning.

Just a thought as I don't have my copy handy, so I can't check. But does it have parts?

Genie, I don't think it has parts. I was just looking through my copy again and it looks like I'm going to have to flip over every page just to see how many chapters there are. Ew. I'm hoping someone has a newer edition that at least has each chapter starting on a new page so the chapters are at least easier to spot.

It's about 1,000 pages, right? Why not roughly break it down to 1-250, 251-500, 551-750 and 751 to end? Or the chapters that begin close to those pages (251, 551 and 751)?

As near as I can tell, the book is divided into what I assume are parts.  In my copy, they are -

Incipit (begins on p. 7)

Dixit (begins on p. 9)

And then -

Alter Pars (begins on p. 35)

Tertia Pars (begins on p. 87

Quatra Pars (begins on p. 137)

Quinta Pars (begins on p. 229)

Sexta Pars (begins on p. 319)

Septima Pars (begins on p. 463)

Octava Pars (begins on p. 585)

Nona Pars (begins on p. 631)

Decima Pars (begins on p. 723)

Undecima Pars (begins on p. 797)

Ultima Pars (begins on p. 891)

To me it seems like they're missing a "2" part as I would assume Alter is 1, Tertia is 3, Quatra is 4, etc.  Then again, I don't speak Nahuatl.  LOL!  Maybe someone else can check their copy and see if I'm wrong.  Regardless, perhaps a divisions could be -

Beginning through Quinta Pars (319 pages)

Sexta Pars through Octava Pars (265 pages)

Septima Pars through Decima Pars (333 pages)

Undecima Pars to the end (241 pages)

Not exactly equal but maybe as close as we'll get.  Thoughts?

Shelley, that looks perfect to me. Thanks for figuring that out for me. I don't know if all the cold meds I've been taking is making me simple-minded or if maybe I really am just simple-minded, but finding the chapters in my copy was HARD, lol.

Thanks! I'll go make some threads for us. Then, I need to get offline and actually read the book!!

Vallli - No, it wasn't your cold meds.  The book is whacked! I pretty much had to page through it one by one to find the breaking points.  Geesh!  Anyway, glad it worked for you.  I can't believe you used it without double checking my accuracy.  You're brave (or not very smart, not sure which), LOL!  Oh, well, I guess we'll all live if I messed up.  Hurry up and read.  I have questions!
