Bastien Lecouffe-Deharme (or Bastien Lecouffe; pseudonym: B. ; born on January 10th, 1982 in Vannes) is a French visual artist, illustrator, photographer and novelist, whose work is mainly in the science-fiction, cyberpunk and dark fantasy genre. He currently lives in Portsmouth, Ohio, USA.
B. was born in Vannes in 1982: at the beginning of the 1980's, his family had moved from Paris to Pluneret in Brittany, where he would spend his childhood and teenage years.In 2000, B. passes a baccalauréat in literature and arts, and joins the Université de Haute Bretagne in Rennes (Brittany), where he studies Arts. In 2006, he passes his Master's degree with honors; it is also around that time that he begins to work as an illustrator, painter and photographer.
In 2007 he moves in Paris, where he works as Artistic Director for the art gallery Le Cabinet des Curieux. There he also meets Whitney, whom he marries on June 3rd, 2010 in Portsmouth, Ohio, USA.
He designed the cover illustration of several SF novels, published by French publishing companies Gallimard, Fleuve Noir and Pocket among others. His first book (William Drum's Diary), coauthored with his childhood friend Gilles Osvald and featuring illustrated texts, will be published in France by the Éditions du Riez in February - March 2011.
William Drum's Diary (published by the Éditions du Riez, to be released in February - March 2011), is a graphic novel in the SF / Cyberpunk genre. B. is the author and creator of the book and the universe it takes place in, and the novel itself was coauthored by Gilles Osvald.
The books takes the form of the illustrated diary of William Drum, a policeman who, as a punishment for beating up his boss, gets sent in Retrocity, a prison-city, biomechanical nightmare where sick mutants and androids are kept from society.As his main sources of inspiration, B. mentions the work of Philip K. Dick (in particular Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? / Blade Runner) ; Brazil ; Lynch's or Fellini's films ; le Roi et l'oiseau by Paul Grimault ; and Ellroy.
