I needed to use up lots of left over yarn and have been knitting them into simple baby blankets. So far I have finished three of them. Now what do ido with them? I would like to give them away but I don't know where to donate them. I would prefer to donate to a small non profit that would actually be able to give them to someone who needs a baby blanket. I don't mind donating it to a large organization but sometimes large organizations have too much of a good thing so I would prefer to donate the blankets to a smaller organization that can give them out at a grass roots level. Any suggestions from anyone would be appreciated.

Have you thought about the foster care program at your local social services? Often these children are taken into protective custody and have nothing but whatever they are wearing.

I would look for women's/children's shelters to donate them to.  Often women in domestic violence situations have to take their children and go to a shelter with nothing but the clothes on their backs, so I would think that baby blankets would be very welcome there.

Another option would be a children's hospital.  Several years ago, my son had to have eye surgery, which was a very scary time for all of us.  He was given a blanket at the hospital after his surgery, and it was his to bring home.  He still has it.  Apparently the children's hospital has several women who volunteer to make them and donate them for this purpose, and we thought it was wonderful.

Wanda,

Thanks I will look into donating it to foster care kids. I should probably make the blankets larger as the ones I have right now are only big enough for a baby.

Lesley,

I like your idea too. There is a St. Jude's children's hospital nearby and I will check with them to see if they wll take donated knitted blankets.

Thanks again.

Hi,

There is an organization that I belong too on yahoo group named Crafting for a Cause.org.  They donate all their crocheting items to the Pine Ridge Reservation in North Dakota.  If you want to check it out I'm sure you will be very happy with the organization.  There are abunch of lovely woman who run this group. They accept anything you can donate. For Children, Elders, babies. Anything would be appreciated.

Think about local battered womens shelters too, they bring their kids with many times nothing more than what they could carry.
