I was hoping that there would be some research on whether the legends were true or not, but beyond the short introduction, there isn't anything on that. On the other hand, urban legends are simllar to how we learned for millenia, around our fires, and it's pretty obvious that we didn't worry too much that some of our religious stories were true or not.
