At thirteen, I was the first in my clique of girls from Smyrna, Georgia, to have an official date. With this I had taken on, unbeknownst to me, a huge responsibility.....
When finally evening descended upon our fair town, the doorbell rang. All eyes turned to me. Excitement filled my body. Maturity was here, or so it seemed, and I was going to throw up. I ran to the bathroom and begged my mother to send him away. She did not. We left my house together....
The date began with a movie.....Finally the credits rolled and we were off to eat at a place called the Mellow Mushroom...
Maybe it was the mushrooms, or perhaps he had been feeling poorly all along. Suddenly there was this smell, not a pizza smell, no--this was a human smell. Another whiff, yes, definitely human. My mind began to race for the source. My eyes began to water from the pungent fumes. I wanted to laugh. I suppressed the urge to turn green. My date has gas! My date is actually farting!...pp. 187-188
