Two brothers come home from school, one excited about the play they're going to see and one not. Nate watches the play avidly while everyone else around him sleeps. He comes home and asks his mother if he can learn ballet. She says that she will see about classes.
Nate's brother Ben says that boys can't be ballerinas. This continues through the book. Nate goes to class and is disheartened, because he's the only boy. His mother takes him to a professional ballet where one of the male dancers clears up the fact that men can dance ballet, but they are called ballerinos.
Why I recommend it: The story is wonderful, pointing out that girls can play on boys' baseball teams. The interaction between the brothers is very well done, proving that even older siblings don't know everything. The art is fantastic with many small details such as the drawings Nate does of ballet poses and the facial expressions of the characters.
