I Am a Barbarian
Author: Edgar Rice Burroughs
....Only [Edgar Rice Burroughs] could have painted so vivid a picture of the life of Britannicus Caligulaw Servus, the personal slave of the mad emperor Caligula. Only the imagination of Edgar Rice Burroughs could have reincarnated the chariot races, the intrigues, the people, the sights and sounds of long-dead imperial Rome.

Someday I would have my revenge..."

I read most of Burroughs' novels when I was a teenager, and loved them. While he has numerous series, many of his stand-alone novels are also very good. Somehow, this novel just didn't read like his others. Perhaps the difference is the content and the historical basis of the story. I still enjoyed it.
