I'm posting this in the CMT forum too, bc I think more people will respond there, but I think more people here will know what I'm talking about.

I want to build a bat house to "invite" bats into our area.  They eat like 1200 mosquitos AN HOUR!!  Anyone had any experience with that?  I know HOW to build the houses, and where to put them, but I don't know if you just do it, and they show up, or if you have to be close to a certain area or part of the country or what.

I'm like manna to mosquitos, and I spend most of the year covered in red spots sprayed with hairspray so they don't itch "as bad."  (And no, it doesn't work, no matter what your mom tells you.)

My parents had a bat house when I was growing up. They just hung it up and the bats showed up the next year.

We have had a bat house up for @ 4 years. You'll have better luck attracting the bats if you place "bat gauno" (poop) on the ground under the house. You may find it in larger gardening stores.

I would love to put one up, but DP is terrified of them.  We have bats in our neighborhood.  I've seen them flying around at dusk.  I think that they are cute.  Good idea about the gauno.  Good luck with the house.  Let us know how it goes.

We have bats living behind the chimney of our house.  Actually on saturday morning, my husband went out with the dog and found a bat hanging a few inches off the ground on the edging of our deck.  He was concerned that it was either injured or rabid...and with both the dog and cat outside he didn't want to take a chance of it waking so he wacked it with a shovel and killed it.....

We put the bat houses on our trees and on the side of a storage building so that they are high enough up that the dog or the cat cant get to them to disturb them during the day.  We have never had to try to attract them, "if you build  it they will come"
