This book was written for young readers. And while it is a good read, it has numerous problems.
Almost all of the dialogue is obviously made up and most of the British sound like Americans. And, if this book had been written during World War II, it would have served as a propaganda tool, as so many of the events were slanted to reflect large British victories.
He purposely has squadron and wing commanders in their teens and early 20s, as the book is directed toward the YA market.
I'd say more, but you probably get the idea. But here are two bits of trivia. Reynolds credits the British victory in the Battle of Britain to the Spitfires, whereas these planes were heavily outnumbered by the Hurricanes at that time. It was the Hurricanes which shot down 60% of the German planes during this epic conflict. And second, he has one pilot, who has a farm, stating his family raises turkeys. In Britain? I need more than Reynolds word to believe that, especially when so much of the book is obviously made up.
