I have just finished Beautiful Boy by David Sheff and am overwhelmed with the poignancy. This is a father's memoir of his family's journey through his son's growing up years. Nic Sheff is a brilliant young man who is instantly likable and had a great family and future. His potential was sidetracked by his addiction to crystal meth, among many other substances. Using, lying, stealing, rehab, research, relapse...anyone who loves someone with an addiction will understand the father's pain, his terror, and the unconditional love that needed boundaries. Great read, even if you don't have a loved one with addictions. |

I just put on my WL the other day. I also put his son's memoir on my WL. |

The father and son were featured on Oprah this week. Very compelling story - we have friends with alcoholic children and it is heartbreaking.

Mary - don't know if I even want to read the son's version. I'm a parent and I don't want to know more than I already do. Yikes. If you remember, PM me when you're finished and let me know what you thought of Tweak. Reading A MIllion Little Pieces was unnerving enough. Susan - wish I would have known they were on Oprah. Maybe I'll catch the rerun this summer. I'm keeping my copy and sharing with all my support group members. I bought a copy for my son's drug counselor since my son graduated from his program yesterday. The counselor told my son he couldn't accept gifts so my son said he'd read it (he's not a reader, so we'll see). If I get his copy back I'll post it. |
