  • Has anyone here used the Beautiful Feet curriculum?
  • Do you use the teaching guides in addition to the books, or do you just read the books?
  • What do you like about Beautiful Feet books/program?

I was looking at their site the other day.  I've begun collecting some used titles from them to supplement next year's Core Sonlight since it's focused mainly on Asia and leaves out traditional 5th grade history topics.

We're doing Sonlight Core US History 3/4 this year which is wonderful, but I find we use the teacher manual little, but really enjoy reading the books.  I find the comprehension questions in the TM are unnecessary for us, my daughter has great recall and doesn't benefit from these questions much.

Hi Michelle, We use Sonlight curriculum.  My kids didn't like all of the questions etc that were included in the teacher's guide.  So we just read the great books and the kids do narration here and there.  It makes it much more enjoyable for us!  I also supplement from the same authors they recommend, if there is another book they have written in our collection.  We are working on core 3 and 4 also.  Hope that helps.   Blessings, Carrie

We are truly enjoying this year's Sonlight program.  Have you noticed the 5th grade core is quite different?  I was beginning to collect the books and then started to question whether or not we will do it after all.  What are your thoughts about the focus on Asian stories and missionary work.  Will you continue with Core 5 and if so - what will you supplement with?

Thanks!  Michelle

Yes Michelle,

We will continue.  I am not sure if we will get all of the American History done this school year.  We still like to read the books through the summer!   I would also like to finish the little House on the Prairie series we started and do the Prairie Primer with them.  But, we did American History last year too.

I think it is good that we focus on other countries too.  I think I read somewhere in Sonlight's info that they do have many people in other countries that use Sonlight.  Sonlight does  not focus as much on US history as other curriculums do.  Their opinion is that most other curriculums do not include enough world history and too much US History.  I do want my kids to be more familiar with  countries, not just our own.   We have lots of Christian brothers and sisters who do not live like we do and who do not have all of the luxuries that we do.  We will have been studying American History for two years and will again when we get to 100.

I will probably supplement with some classics that we haven't read yet.  I checked and we have already read two of the books they recommend.

Since you are doing the Core 4/5 together...If you don't care for the focus on The Eastern Hemisphere then maybe you could just skip it and go on to World History.  I have definately adapted their curriculum to fit our needs.  Taking longer when we need it, etc.  We have loved all of their book recommendations except one, that the kids thought was boring.

I just added you to my buddy list.  Feel free to PM me.  Hope that helps!  Carrie

Thanks for adding me as a buddy.  :-)

Yes, I was concerned the Eastern focus was not what I wanted as a total package.  We did not do much in the way of US history the last 2 years and I feel like we have some making up to do.  I do believe however she will benefit greatly from learning about other cultures, so I will move forward to use the Sonlight 4/5 History program.

I believe the Beautfiul Feet History books may really fit the bill for supplementing next year.

Did you see the other post about Hands of A Child?  I ordered some items this week from them and we're loving these so far.  We didn't have much time for prep for history/science unit studies and they make it so ez to get them in.

Have a great week!  Michelle

I have used a couple of the Beautiful Feet curriculum guides. We really enjoyed Early American History. The books were wonderful. We did it early on (like 1st grade), so I did like having the guide. If you have the list of books though, it would not be hard to come up with your own ideas.

Currently, we are using their History of Science curriculum. I do like it, but we are using it more as a framework and going much slower through the topics.

I don't know much about Sonlight, so I can't help much comparing the two.
