This is a great story about a Pioneer of Modern Medicine and very courageous Christian man. Harold Shryock was born in 1906 to Dr Alfred and Stella Shryock. DR Alfred has a bustling private practice in Washington State. He left it to become a teacher at the new Loma Linda Medical School, which had no hospital at that time.He took a huge pay cut.The medical school gave the family a small 4 room house to live in. His father a doctor and his mom a nurse believed that they could better home school Harold than any public or other school could. Thus Harold was homeschooled until 10th grade. His parents forgot one thing for their only child socialization with his peers. In eleventh grade Harold went to a christian school to finish high school but he was not allowed to participate in after school activities. He was to go home study, Read or play an instrument. When Harold went away 2 years to pre-med school college then he had a bit more freedom. He finished medical school to become a teacher there and married Daisy, a nurse .Harold put all of himself into his teaching to make Loma Linda one of the best in the world. This book is very interesting about Harold but also describes the time periods. We have no idea how good we have it with electricity and gas, washer and dryers, Refrigerators, freezers, Cars that actually work with batteries and all the medical advances such as iV's and blood transfusions. Before the invention of our modern world life was hard and a lot of people died.Reading about the time period in this book was a bonus to see how folks lived during those times with out our modern conveniences.Harold overcame his stifled childhood to be a very outgoing man.
