I was doing a search for info on black labs and came across this.... It breaks my heart.  I am just sick.

That's terrible Sheila!  I want to save them all, but we know it's impossible.

We did adopt our first dog from people who found her living behind a dumpster, and were about to send her to the shelter.  The second one came from the shelter (had been there for 6 weeks) and had a euthanasia date 5 days out from when we got him.  They're both just the sweetest dogs, and we're crazy about them!

I can't stop thinking about these guys.  That's awesome that you saved their lives :)

We got two toy poodles from the shelter and a rescue group; good friends got a shih Tzu (unsure about that spelling!) from the shelter.

Shelter workers say they get an incredible number of purebred, popular-breed dogs; mostly from people who think they are cute, and then find it takes some work and attention.

I agree with Sharon - I'd get that lab immidiately if I weren't living at home and about to go to college. Doesn't matter to me that I live in Illinois, I'd be willing to pay to get the dog sent to me if it would save his life.

As for all the purebreds left at shelters, I once found a shelter online that takes Dobermans. I have a speacial liking for working breeds, and was looking for shelters that might have them (for when I get my own place). Here's the site: dobierescue.org.

I think it is 30% of shelter dogs are purebred.

i visit the local shelters a lot and at least half of the dogs there on any given day are purebred or "designer" breeds. everything from chinese cresteds to yorkies to german shepherds to boxers to labs to great danes to doodle dogs.

there are a ton of really fantastic dogs in the shelters. it's such a shame.

I am all about rescuing dogs. I don't understand how people can buy pets in pet stores when there are so many animals in need out there.
