I was really surprised by this book. I've read books by John Welters in the past and was not expecting a character as complex and well developed as the protagonist, Kurt Clausen. He is arrogant, self centred and not partially likeable. He is at war with the world and lashes out with his sardonic wit. An alcoholic who's inflated sense of importance causes him to think even his alcoholism is somehow superior to everyone else's at an AA meeting. I would have rated this book higher, but I feel that John Welter didn't completely understand his own character which left the novel somehow unresolved. The author felt that Kurt Clausen problem was that he didn't know how to relax. For Kurt to really heal he needs to turn that wit against himself and have a great big belly laugh about the absurdity of his situation.
