Bernard Salt is an author, business advisor and media commentator. He rose to prominence with the release of his first book The Big Shift (2001) in which he predicted a rise in the demand for coastal lifestyle property underpinned by the imminent retirement of the baby boom generation. From 2003 onwards he has written a weekly column in The Australian newspaper in which he tackles a broad range of social, cultural and generational issues. He is a Partner with the advisory firm KPMG.
Bernard Salt is known for his tagging of demographic trends with popular terms such as seachange (meaning migration to the coast) and treechange (move to the country) as well as KIPPERS (kids in parents pockets eroding retirement savings) and NETTEL (not enough time to enjoy life). He also drew attention to what he calls the Sigrid Effect which is the phenomenon of sudden population growth occurring in towns in which actress Sigrid Thornton has filmed TV mini series.
