Let's say a friend wanted to know your three favorite authors currently writing, and the 1-3 favorite books by them of yours. What authors do you not only think are very talented, but are also pretty good crowd-pleasers? I don't exactly mean you'd choose it because it was popular, but just that their work would appeal to most anyone.

I think Michael Chabon's writing is fairly accessible.  The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay is my favorite, but The Yiddish Policemen's Union and Wonder Boys were great too.

Zadie Smith is the most talented working today.

Randall Kenan has more talent but apparently doesn't work.

Fifty years from now the one who has cast the longest shadow will be Cormac McCarthy.
