Norman Bethune, distinguished thoracic surgeon, was among the most admired surgeons in the world. He went to Spain in 1936 to fight facism, returned briefly to Canada, then set out for China to help Mao Tse-Tung. A valued ally of Mao's, he was an inspiration to the famous Eighth Route Army.
