I have a friend who is trying to find a book she read by this author several years ago.  In the book the heroine is forced to take several jobs that aren't the best because she needs a place where she can have her animals with her.  She has a dog and a cat and perhaps one more animal.  One of her jobs is at a nursing home type place in Scotland where she is treated badly and the patients aren't treated all that well either.  I'm not sure if she was a nurse or in a lower paying position.

I know this fits a gazillion Betty Neels titles.  The one thing that she remembers that might narrow it down to the right one, is when the hero (a doctor of course) says something about loving her because she traveled the length and breadth of the country to keep her little family of animals.

This book is definitely not The Promise Of Happiness where the heroine has Bertie and Pooch.
