This historical, inspirational romance is set during the Civil War. Charity goes to live with her aunt in NC since her parents are dead and brother is missing from the war. Charity has to try and overcome her hatred for the Yankees and teach in the little school there.
With the War between the States over and people working to rebuild a sense of normality, Charity Morgan feels led to join her aunt in Falling Water Valley, North Carolina. Now that both of her parents are dead and her brother is missing from service in the confederate Army, there is nothing left for her in Tennessee. The war has torn the small valley community apart, with residents still holding allegiances to both sides of the conflict. Charity will do her duty, but she cannot bring herself to be kind to Will Bowers, who fought on the Union side. And that is fine with Will, for after finding out that Charity's brother was a famous Confederate spy, his initial interest in her has become confused. If Charity ever finds her brother, how can she bring him into this maelstrom of political emotions that she is learning to call home.
