This was the book that got me hooked on Stanley Hastings, loser private investigator extrodinaire, who pends most of his time chasing ambulances to drum up business for his lawyer boss. In the process, he somehow always manages to get himself into hot water as in this case involving blackmail and murder and a lot of grief from the NYPD. With persistence, wit, and a lot of help from his ever-loving wife, Alice, Stanley wins through and provides a lot of laughs in the process.
