First, I hate amnesia stories but David Rosenfelt did the impossible; he created a perfectly logical amnesia story that follows through quite well. People often regain their memories when they are under stress (according to psychologists and other medical experts). Mr. Rosenfelt follows that theory beautifully.

When the teenaged boy that Doug Brock was going to adopt is killed, Doug is convinced that Nicholas Bennett is behind the killing. He becomes obsessed with putting Bennett behind bars. He becomes so obsessed that he even breaks up with his fiancee' and is labeled by his New Jersey police dept. as a nut case.

One day, he calls his partner, Nate, about getting ready to take Bennett down, when two shots come across the phone line, and then it is dead. Doug's physical injuries aren't bad but his memory did not survive a fall from a second-story balcony. After being released from the hospital, Doug moves in with Nate and tries to reconstruct his life.

Doug goes back to work and tries to remember his life and what he was doing when he was shot. The author does a good job of giving Doug the tools he would need to reconstruct his career and life. There's humor within the story. The story is exciting and suspenseful. It took a bit of time to get used to no-Tara and no-sly-lawyer-humor. It was well worth my time.

Once again, Rosenfeld has a winner here! The characters were deep and believable, it was fast paced, held my interest, great ending!
