This was a great book! It deals with a lot of ethical issues surrounding a remarkable friendship. I'm not usually one for a happy ending, and while I wouldn't call this ending typical, it did end relatively neatly. I found myself questioning what I would do throughout the book.
If you've ever had a childhood friend that was as dear to you as any sister or brother, then you will understand this book and it will tug at your heartstrings. Darla and Joanne are the closest of friends. So close, in fact, that Joanne is pregnant with a child for Darla.
The novel is a mystery of sorts and starts out immediately after Joanne's car has crashed into Darla's home. Alternating between scenes out of Joanne's and Darla's mutual past and the present, Jean Reynolds Page weaves an engrossing tale of love and loss, misunderstanding and heartbreak that, ultimately, ends with hope and a measure of redemption.
The characters are real and flawed, and Page has managed to give their lives an implied depth beyond the current tragedy. Altogether a very satisfying read. Four out of five starts.
I couldn't put this book down - what a great writer!
This is a lovely story of a friendship, a marriage, and the secrets we keep from those we love. It's also a bit of a mystery but you'll be pleased at the end.
If you are looking for a quick but interesting read, this is the book for you! Definitely a "take to the beach and read" book. Poses some good questions, a bit of a tearjerker to some degree! I was very impressed with this book and it was better than I anticipated!
Very good book! I couldn't put it down.
Get some tissues ready. A coming of age story.
I thought this was an extraordinary story with lots of emotion. I have a best friend like this and while the story was extreme I could see how the events came about, and feel bad for the people that were hurt.
I loved this book and stayed up late to finish it - I read it in one night. I HAD to see what happened. I was happy with how the book ended, too. It's a book that stayed w/ me after I read it.
Excellent novel,I read it in two days!
an interesting story with some twists
Best friends since childhood, Joanne Timbro and Darla Stevens carry there friendship into adulthood. They decide to share a baby together with Darla's husband CAl. Since Darla couldn't get pregnant Joanne decided to to do it for her, but a tragic accident happens into Joanne's 4th month which changes everyones life forever.
I can't believe this was her first book! It was fantastic! A book hasn't touched me like this in a long time. Have some tissues nearby!
Wow! What a book! Really loved it and it was truly very emotional and quite a tearjerker of a read!!!
