Bo Schembechler MAN IN MOTION Author:JOE FALLS about the author — Joe Falls grew up on the streets of New York — playing such strange games as stickball and hockey — on roller skates ("Who had ice skates? Who had ice?"). — He lived in Detroit since 1953 and figures the last 20 — years of his life have been more important than the first — 25-so, he proudly proclaims, "I'm a Midwesterner now." — ...T... more »hough he still says "New Yawk", "Winta and "Idear."
Joe, 45, is the Sports Editor of the Detroit Free Press.
He has bee writing sports in Detroit and Michigan for more
than two decades--first with the Associated Press bureau in
Detroit, then with the old Detroit Times and presently
with the Free Press.
Mostly, he was a baseball writer. He covered the Tigers
for 10 straight years. "The Lou Berberet Era." he calls it.
He joined the Free Press in 1960, was appointed columnist
in 1965 and Sports Editor in 1966. He also writes a column
for the Sporting News, the national sports weekly.
"I've even learned what a blitz is," says Falls. "Mr.
Schembechler taught me."
And that is a story in itself-how the author, who never
played football in his life, nor ever covered a football game until coming to Michigan, could be so highly critical
of Bo Schembechler's style of football in Michigan...and then sit down and write a book with the coach. Read on. You
