So what do you do when the Germans are sinking 10 ships a week in the Indian Ocean, and the radio providing the shipping information is located in the neutral port of Goa, a colony of Portugal, your oldest ally?

You can't send in your commandos, or even a team of armed agents, but you can send in a bunch of old guys, too old or unfit for the war, who could be blamed for being drunk and not thinking clearly. Of course, the old guys are located on the other side of India, and the long sea journey will be on a ship never designed to be afloat on the ocean.

Odds are it won't work, but you can't keep losing 10 ships a week. So you try it anyway. To find out what happens and how it happened you just need to read the book.
