Take away a schizophrenic's medication and give him a bunch of water to drink and he'll still be mentally ill. We need to drink more water, yes, but attempting to make the case for replacing medication with water is preposterous. Not enough solid evidence in this book for me.

I think disciples of this fake prophet protest too much.

Makes a lot of good points about the need to stay hydrated and the ill effects of not doing so. My migraines have virtually disappeared since I started heeding his advice.

This could be the single most important book (regarding your health) that you will ever read in your whole life. But, there's a catch: you actually have to read it to understand why. Any posters who have spoken against it, or are displaying only a mild interest in this book have either not read it, or only skimmed it. More is the pity because this book is easy to read, well written, very technical, but written in such a way that a layman can readily understand it. Moreover, the style of writing makes it an interesting read. It is way beyond the "you must drink eight glasses of water per day" routine, so don't make the mistake of shrugging it off by saying: "Oh I drink plenty of water already".

I have recommended this book to people who read it, applied it, and have consequently conquered health problems they have been living with for years, often with medications that came with their own set of unpleasant side effects. These problems have ranged from headaches, arthritis, heartburn, asthma, allergies, high blood pressure, angina, tiredness, vertigo, urinary incontinence, to depression, constipation, dyspepsia and much more. Now, most of them are off their meds, or have reduced them drastically and feeling better than they have in a long, long time. I even lost over 10 lbs in less than 3 months, just by following the method described in this book and without otherwise changing my eating or exercise habits. This, after my weight loss had plateaued for more than 2 years!...

The best part about this method is that it costs virtually nothing to implement. All you need is tap water and a little sea salt and you are on your way! And, since you are getting the book from PBS, even that won't cost you a thing!

The claims sound unbelievable, but I have seen this method do so much for so many people now, that I can safely recommend it very very highly and say that anyone who does not follow up on learning about this technique is doing himself a great disservice.

This author's books all have impressive reviews:

"I believe this book (UK edition: Water & Salt - Your Healers from Within; The U.S. edition: Water for Health, for Healing, for Life) would be seen in fifteen years time as an absolute classic health book."

-Phillip Day, British author and health investigative journalist, March 2005

"Dr. Batmagnhelidj is a highly respected 'founding father' as far as information on the important of water is concerned and his books describe in technically detailed, yet simple to understand, language how dehydration affects the physiological process leading to the logical manifestation of symptoms, which are, in fact, simply the warning lights of dehydration displayed in various bodily areas."

"Dr. B's approach became even more holistic as he taught about nutrition and lifestyle but his book now take on a global view of sickness (versus health) from prescription pad to policy makers. His understanding of ramifications and side effects of drugs is as extensive as his explanation on the physiological function of water and anyone who studies health with open eyes cannot help but see the ugly face of politics, even though there might be no desire to see it. Dr B never tries in his efforts to enlighten fellow medical doctors to conceptual errors. However, in true, loving, plain speaking, he makes known what is happening to the nation's health by treating dehydration, or more accurately, trying to silence the symptoms of dehydration, by drug-centered treatment."

"In Water Cures, Drug Kill, after a wake up call to America and Britain, Dr. B outline several dis-ease state (warning symptoms) which progress to disease states (actual damage). He elaborate multiple and varied case histories which confirm dehydration as the cause of symptoms. His examples are so varied that almost anyone could find, within the pages of his books, information directly relevant to his/her personal situation."

Dr. B's groundbreaking books show how water affects body function and structure, and he openly questions current paradigms regarding health. His books make sound, logically progressive reading and by the time you come to the end of them you will be able to see logical reasons to tie them to lack of water (and unrefined salt).

Both Dr. B's books and Dr. Hendel /Gerreira's book proclaim the importance of water and unrefined salt to mental health and altruism. This can be clearly discerned in these authors and all three books are extremely informative, inspiring and certainly exceed high recommended reading."

Vivienne Bradshaw -Black, British health writer
POSITIVE HEALTH Magazine, UK. Dec. 2004 UK

"I have now read part of your book You Are Not Sick; You Are Thirsty. I must confess that, apart from the Holly Bible, I am yet to find a book as enlightening as the above in the breakdown of normally complex technical, scientific jargons and in the presentation of such to the previously uninformed."

Prof. Lekan Oyedeji, University Lagos, Nigeria, Oct. 2004

"It's curious to note that he (Dr. B)'s a conventionally trained medical doctor, and yet, like so many of the doctors I interview on this site, he has the calling of a true scientist. He has the willingness to venture beyond modern medicine and explore the true causes of health and disease. In doing so, he has pioneered the understanding of how water can create health (or lack of water can create disease) in the human body. This is groundbreaking work and Dr B. deserves to be widely recognized for his contribution to medical understanding. And yet, that is precisely what is not happening. Rather than being nominated for a scientific prize, Dr. B has been marginalized by the conventional medical community. His critics refuse to recognize the true role of water in the human body. And, of course, the tremendous financial interests of the pharmaceutical industry and the "sick care" industry (also known as healthcare industry) all have a vested interest in making sure that doctors treat diseases with extremely expensive prescription drugs and high profit medical procedures rather than low-cost substance like water."

"The bottom line to all this is that Dr. B is a true international hero when it comes to having the wisdom to recognize the fundamental causes of disease and the courage to speak up about it and tell the truth as he sees it."

"The world owes Dr. B a debt of gratitude, and I only hope that someday he will be considered for the Nobel Prize or some other worthy recognition for his pioneering and courageous work on the healing effects of water."

Mike Adams, Health writer

"Dr. B tells me, 'I've introduced an entirely new understanding of disease by proposing that chronic dehydration can manifest itself in many ways we in medicine have labeled as diseases conditions.' He believes that ingestion of water may render a cure without resorting to standard medications. Interestingly, it appears that this "water therapy" is the great equalizer among the conventional and alternative medical communities. Many practitioners from both arenas speak highly of Dr. B's work. For instance, his 1995 book Your Body's Many Cries for Water has received accolades from the ultra alternative Townsend Letter for Doctors and Patients to the button-down page of the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology whose book review called it a "masterpiece." Your Body's Many Cries for Water gives through and technically scholarly explanations for why dehydration can precipitate these bodily malfunctions."

"Effective, non-conventional, drug-free approaches in America often are denied research money and are left in obscurity. In Dr. B's instance, since drinking water is a cheap and plentiful commodity, he's probably correct that there is no way to turn a big buck - so the spotlight misses his water therapy. Ironically, Dr. B, perhaps the country's foremost expert on the physiological implications of water, doesn't make much off his recommendations either, nor does he appear to be inclined to do so. Dr. B calls his work a public service."

Rebecca Ephraim, RD, CCN,
CONSCIOUS CHOICE, the Journal of Ecology& Natural Living, Jun. 2001

"Rare indeed are those books destined to become all-time classics. Even rarer are books destined to accomplish a paradigm shift in any major area of modern knowledge. Of still greater rarity are books destined to benefit significantly the health of countless millions of human beings, at no cost to them. Such a landmark book is Your Body's Many Cries for Water by Dr. F. Batmanghelidj. He has made revolutionary discovery about water metabolism of the human body."

"The new paradigm shift for future research should be 'water, the solvent of the body, regulates all functions, including the activity of the solutes it dissolves and circulates."

Dr. Geroge J. Georgiou, Ph. D., Clinical Nutritionist
WORLDWIDEHEALTHCENTER.NET, Nov. 2002

"The water principle has a convincing logic but turns much of current medical practice on its head. Does it work? You only have to turn on the tap to find out."

The European, London, UK Dec. 1995

"He is arguing for a new scientific approach that turns clinical medicine on its head."

The Daily Telegraph, London, UK, Aug. 1997

"The average American is woefully uninformed about water. Most people think they drink enough water, but they don't. Dr. Batmanghelidj's book will create a tide of public opinion about the wonders of water."

The Connection Newspaper, July, 1994

"As his controversial book quietly gathers support worldwide, the doctor behind one of medicine's most extraordinary theories explains why he has turned his back on conventional wisdom to treat his patients with water, not drugs"

Daily Mail, London,U.K., Aug. 2001

Doctor Finds Ulcer Remedy "It started with a patient suffering unbearable ulcer pain one late night. The Doctor treated him with 500 cubic centimeter of water. His pain became less severe and then disappeared completely. The physician was so impressed that he prescribed two glasses of water six times a day and achieved a "clinical" cure of the ulcer attack."

The New York Times "Science Watch", June, 1983

"When Dr. Batmanghelidj thinks of a glass of water, he doesn't think of it as half full or half empty. He thinks of it as brimming over with the essential fluid of life. He thinks of it as the solvent of our ills and the deliverer of ripe old age. He thinks of it as the wave of the future."

The Washington Times

"We have, he says in a new and highly controversial book, Your Body's Many Cries for Water, forgotten how to respond to our numerous thirst signals. But if, instead of taking painkillers and medication, we just drank lots of ordinary tap water, we would probably find that not only the pain, but also the condition would go away for ever."

The Independent, London,U.K, Jan. 1994

"Stomach pains, migraines, allergies, asthma, and even arthritis may all be symptoms of dehydration that could easily be cured by a few more glasses of household tap water. But only drinking water when you are feeling thirsty will not provide you with enough, according to F. Batmanghelidj, whose controversial book, Your Body's Many Cries for Water, sold tens of thousands of copies in the United States last year."

Daily Mail, London, U.K.,

"Batmanghelidj gives example of patients who have followed his advice using ordinary tap water with positive results in reduction of blood pressure, allergy relief and weight loss. He even goes so far as to link the lack of water with depression."

The Irish Times, March, 1994

A Medical Atom Bomb! "This book by a highly respected M.D. explodes a medical atom bomb--An entirely new paradigm for the cause and prevention of many degenerative diseases! You owe it to yourself to read this incredible book!"

Excellent book - many will discount it, simply because it is too easy to do and requires one to at least partially take responsibility for their own state of health.
I could not find anywhere in the book where the Doctor told anyone, let alone a schizophrenic to stop taking their medication and go drink a glass of water. I am a manic-depressive and I have implemented drinking water (something I formerly refused to do) daily - especially as soon as I get up in the morning. have I discontinued my medication and been miraculously cured?? - No on both counts. This does in no way invalidate the Doctor's claims. I have received many good side effects to my health and now that I am getting the amount of water daily that my body demands, (You will notice its demands for water after implementing this procedure) I have seen many beneficial effects (with no other changes in my lifestyle) from weight loss, more energy, softer glowing skin, no colds, lower cholesterol etc etc - and I was in good health to start with. i can only assume someone in poor health would observe even greater benefits.
I urge skeptics to actually read the book with an open questioning mind before passing erroneous judgement on it.

I read this book twice. Once, it did not have the homophobic chapter on AIDS that it randomly has inserted now (must have been an earlier edition). The chapter about AIDS is without any linkage to the rest of the text andalso has nothing to do with dehydration. It is just filled with talk of "normal" sexual activity contrasted with "unnatural rectal sexual urges" made me cringe. It also made me discount such a biased view of human sexuality as basically unscientific. This made me think the rest of what Dr Batmangelidj had to say just might also be bunk. Overall, the ist time I read it, I enjoyed it very much. The second time (with the addition of a non-sequitur chapter full of homophobic morbid assumptions about AIDS being some sort of gay problem in nature)I found the author's credibility shot.

I haven't read this book. It was given to me by my 50-something mother who swears by it. Fiercely. She loved it.
