Nominate the book that you'd like to be Book of the Month. It needs to be a book of Historical Fiction that is less than 400 pages. I'll randomly choose a winner and announce it here. I'll choose the book Monday to give everyone time to get here and post. Let me know if you think I need to wait longer.

NOMINATIONS:

  • Mistress of the Sun - Sandra Gulland
  • The Last Kingdom - Bernard Cornwell
  • The Romanov Bride - Robert Alexander
  • Mistress of the Art of Death - Ariana Franklin
  • Abundance - Sena Jeter Naslund
  • The Thrall's Tale - Judith Lindbergh
  • The Nature of Monster's - Clare Clark

Would you guys like me to add Mistress of the Art of Death? It's only a few pages over the limit.

One book I've been meaning to get to is Mistress of the Art of Death by Ariana Franklin. One pb version (0425219259) is marked down to $5.99 at Amazon. But it's 32 pages over the page count. So if we're going to stick to the page count, my replacement nomination is Mistress of the Sun (ISBN 074329887X) by Sandra Gulland, which is now available on Amazon at a 34% discount. It's exactly 400 pages. Ha!

Wow, I didn't even know that HF came in "less than 400 pages."  This will be difficult because I am afraid I'll choose something that a lot of people have already read. I found one that I realllllly wanted to nominate, but it was 409 pages, but I didn't think I should break the rules on the first run. LOL

I nominate:

Lords of the North: A Novel (Saxon Tales)
Author:
Bernard Cornwell

Oooh Mistress of the Art of Death does look good.  Honestly, I am completely drawing a blank for something to nominate :)

I just started reading Mistress of the Sun.

I'm going to stick my neck out and nominate Robert Alexander's new novel, The Romanov Bride. I got my copy at Target for around $15.

I did not respond to the other thread, but I'd like to join the monthly read-along provided I have the book already on Mount TBR (which I'm slowly whittling down). If I don't have the book, I'll just skip the discussion for the month. I don't think that will be a problem too often. I own WAY too many books!

Yeah, I'm with Felicia. I just simply cannot afford (right now) to order books for discussion that I don't alrady have. However, I am #1 for Mistress of the Sun AND The Romanov Bride, so if those are chosen this month, maybe I will get lucky and get them off here.

I don't think Valli is suggesting anything other than voluntary. This should be fun, not a chore. :)

So far, I'm up for each suggested book.

Oh no, Valli thinks everyone should participate. Ditch the jobs, lose those troublesome children and pets, and come play with ME! Get your priorities straight.

You know, I think, if given the opportunity, I could easily turn into The Book Club Prison Matron. Up against the wall, Put your noses in the books ladies. See, it could happen. It's a good thing we're planning to pass the leading of this off each month because I'd turn myself into a four-star general within two months, tops. You guys probably think I'm kidding, don't you? :-O

Should we get rid of the page limit? I considered the limit because I thought only bums like me had time to read a long book in a month's time. We're just feeling this out as we go, huh?! We'll find a way to make it work for everyone.

I'm okay with a little over 400 since it was sort of my suggestion along with others. (I didn't want that to sound like it was just my idea).  I vote for Mistress of the Sun not just 'cause of the length.  It sounds good.  How's that general Valli?

General Valli...I do like the sound of that. I think Mistress of the Sun is a great idea. It will definitely be added to the hat.

I'm off to check, but what is this book about?  My preference would be for a paperback book, it's easier on the budget.

Mistress of the Sun is a new novel about Louis XIV's first mistress, Louise de la Vallière.

Give people a little power, Valli, and their true nature comes out. ;-) btw, I'm already up against the wall. Now, where's my book?!

Telynor on HF.org just wrote a review for Mistress of the Sun. 4 stars.

Mimi, Nominate a paperback! I'm going to randomly choose the book. I'll also look around and see if I can find a good sale or a coupon for Mistress of the Sun in case it's chosen. Sometimes, you can find a new HC for just as cheap as the paperback.

I've added the books nominated so far to the first post.

My suggestion is Abundance, A Novel of Marie Antionette,  because it is in my TBR pile, but it's nearly 600 pages.

But, seriously, I'm easy. Whatever everyone wants.

I saw one called The Thrall's Tale by Judith Lindbergh that looked pretty good.  I put it on my Reminder list.  Anyone read that one?  If not I guess thats the one I'll nominate for this month.

The only one suggested so far that I've read is Abundance.  The hard part is going to be finding a book none of us has read!

Picking the book choice on Monday seems fine to me.

I had planned on reading the Saxon Chronicles anyway but isn't Lords of the North the 3rd book in the series?

Oh, well I thought Lords of the North was the first book in the series. Oops! Um, well I un-nominate that one and nominate the first one in the series, whichever one that is. Sorry!

I looked it up.  Its the Last Kingdom.  I should have known that because I got it in the mail a couple of weeks ago!

Lords of the North has been un-nominated and The Last King has been put in it's place. I also added The Thrall's Tale and Abundance. We have a good list going!
