Hi,

I have been editing pics for a while now. I still have yet to understand what the above blue boxes and the statements are for. (Disregard the book pic. It's for example).

Can someone explain this to me.

Thanks,

Elona

Hi Elona.  In the example you post, the website is telling you that someone submitted a small image to the system that passed approvals, but it was not large enough to qualify for the medium and large image sizes, so those "slots" are still open / blank and need an image submitted.

The blue boxes mean that an image in that size category is not currently available in the PBS system and needs one to be submitted to "fill" the size slot.

Uploading Book Covers in a Nutshell:

1. Image must be in .jpg format
2. Crop the image so nothing but the cover shows
3. No Amazon arrows, Ebay or other trademarks on the pictures
4. Optimal size is around 500 x 300 pixels (bigger is better as long as the image size does not exceed 5 MB)
5. Book title must display clearly, no photo image glare or fuzzy, unclear or obscured images
6. Use the Upload Book Covers link found by clicking Member Tools at the bottom of the page

You can submit a cropped image by saving the image onto your computer, then going to PBS and clicking on the Member Tools link at the bottom of the page, then choose the Upload Book Covers link. Then, type in the book's ISBN and the link to the location of the picture saved on your computer. Click the Upload images button, and the new picture will be submitted for approval. Note: It sometimes takes a day or two for the image to go through the approvals process and get loaded into the system.

I always prefer to get a book with the cover picture.

Does this mean I judge a book by its cover???

Thank you so much for the explanation. I understand it perfectly, now.

Elona

P.S. The above was my eensy-weensy pic I uploaded. It didn't turn up on my bookshelf, but it did in the posted books display. I uploaded a bigger one today. This should work.

I have a few books on my shelf that don't have a cover image.  Is this something anyone can do?  I'm with Judith I tend to judge a book by its cover also.

If there is no cover image I tend to skip passed it.  So it bothers me to post books without and image.

Anyone can do it Janice. I try to get pictures for mine as soon as I notice they've posted without one. I also often do it for books I've ordered without one, in case I want to repost it, and for some random ones I see on the shelves of friends.  I also periodically review my whole bookshelf...checking to see that descriptions are present and genres as well. Some books don't have one or the other or both, and while "you can't judge a book by its cover," you really can't if there are no other clues!

Hi,

I'm wondering what programs other people use to fix their pics. I use Windows Photo Gallery.

Thanks,

Elona

I use Adobe PhotoShop, but I'm kind of a dork about image editing.  I don't think anyone needs anything that detailed to do this type of image editing.

I often do it with Irfanview...it's a tiny program that does a lot.

OK HELLLPPPP.  I was attempting to do this image editing thing and messed up 2 before I think I got one right.  Is there someone I should contact or will it just wash out when they go to approve it and see it is wrong.  I am computer iliterate but thought I might be able to do this image thing.  Well it was a good thought.

Janice,

Good try! Don't give up

It will wash out if it's not acceptable. No problem. You can always try it again :)

Hmm.

I checked out Infranview. How intimidating! Talk about big in a little package. I think you could cook dinner with this one.

It's probably easier than it looks, though. I'll have to try it out.

Thanks for the tip,

Irfanview is really easy, it may look intimidating, but it's not.

I just uploaded a bunch of covers, when I went on my latest uploading books spree, a lot of them didn't have covers shown, so I stuck them on the scanner, and then uploaded them. All but one is now shown.

Great idea! I was taking phone pics all this time. Lol

I'm going to try this out tomorrow.

Thanks,
