I am getting books for a reading a program at my daughter's school The librarian specifically only wants hard cover for wear and tear since it will go out every week with a different child. I have only selected HC books (or waitlisted for them). I now received a PB version. I tried to contact the sender with no luck, now what. Here is our exchange:
Hi xxxl -
Response: I'm sorry it came up as hardcover. That was not my mistake!
The book does not have an ISBN on the back cover or inside covers. If you read the credits page, it has two numbers, one is coming up as paperback and the other says right next to it in the book Library Binding. She entered this incorrectly, as there are several listings of this book and I choose only the hard covers. Do I have any recourse now? |

I had sort of the same problem too. The book comes us as hardcover but it's softcover. There is an ISBN inside but it comes up hardcover. I don't care for myself but I want to know what to do when I post it. |

Wow, I just posted a similar post. One thing I noticed while looking for the ISBN throughout this book is that some books list the ISBNs for BOTH the hardcover and paperback versions. Check to be sure there isn't another ISBN number elsewhere in the book. I also came across this post in a search (I'm not sure how to link from here, so I'll paste the text): ...Help center search is for "isbn on paperback comes up hardcover" this brings up
as the first three search results. if the ISBN on your book brings up a hardcover, you do need to be sure your book is not an ARC, as the first bulleted item above mentions. :) ETA: just actually copy-pasting from your post "when I type in the ISBN the description comes up with the correct title, author, etc., but it describes it as Hardcover when it isn't it is a paperback" brings up the first item above. Wow, that Help Center search works well. |

When you go to mail the book the description comes up as hardback or paperback and asks if this is your book, right? If that's the case she confirmed it was a hardback and it is her problem. |

It was the poster's mistake. When you enter a book, you are asked if the information provided is the book you have. This poster said yes when it was in fact not what they had. The instructions are clear that it should not have been posted that way. Being new is no excuse for answering questions incorrectly and posting a book you don't have. At a minimum the poster should have PM'd you prior to mailing the book. You should get your credit back. Offer the return the book, but be firm in asking for the credit back. The book should have been posted correctly. |

When entering the ISBN # and if it comes up as hardcover and your book is paperback, it should be listed under no ISBN. It might have been an honest mistake but if it was me, I would have given the credit back to the person that requested the book. |

Thanks, these discussions about condition has been very helpful. I'm fairly new and usually if I can read the book, I don't care. I'm starting to realize though I need to keep reposting the book in mind. If I can't repost then I need to be firm about getting the proper credit. This is the second issue that I have had (not bad really, I've gotten a lot of books and I fear that in ignorance in the beginning one of my books went out that shouldn't have). I'm living and learning.... |

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I sent a reply (below) and am a little hurt by her not so nice response. I have marked the book read and hope she gives the credit as promised. Hi xxx - Hi Sandy!
The Book Title, Author & ISBN# matched exactly or I wouldn't have posted it. When I get a credit you can have it and I'm cancelling my membership. I've gotten a book that wasn't Hardcover, but that was ok! Also, I've gotten a damaged book, one with missing pages, "Postage Due" and now this. I feel some people are taking advantage of others. xxxx |

It sounds like this member had many problems already and is getting frustrated. I'm not sure this was the case but a lot of new members don't read the help before posting books. |

Sandy, you might want to consider adding a requestor condition that the book must be a hardcover. That way, it'd catch anyone that didn't pay attention when posting their books into the system. |

You shouldn't have to put in requestor conditions that say "please make sure you are following the rules". In the few short months I have been a member here I have received many paperback children's books that were listed as hardcovers. It seems to me that people pay less attention to children's books because they feel like "kids will read anything so it doesn't matter that I sent the incorrect book".
I don't understand why if you mark a book being received with a problem because the wrong book was sent the system doesn't automatically give you your credit back. I understand that damaged by USPS and sender and other things could be subjective and would need to be worked out between the parties, but a wrong book is a wrong book.

Sandy, I hope you marked the book received with a problem. The sender was in error by posting a paperback as a hardcover version. The fact that she's received books with problems does not give her license to disobey the rules. While the sender will still receive a credit, it will mark the problem on her account. If she continues to break the rules regarding posting, hopefully it will be noticed. |

I know you shouldn't HAVE to put the condition in there, but if HC is that important, I certainly would. |

Wow, that's too bad. It sounds like she made an honest mistake, but didn't like the remedy set up by r&r. |
