I took a book to my local post office with the stamps on it.  I wanted to make sure it was correct since I was sending it first class.  I had $1.82 in stamps on it.  Guy at the counter took it, and said ....'yup, it's fine"  Today I get it back in the mailed with a stamp that says RETURNED FOR POSTAGE and they put post marks all over my stamps!!!  So I'm assuming now not only will my book be very late it getting where it needs to go...I'm out $1.82!!!!!  Is there any recourse in a situation like this?  I tried to call my PO and didn't get an answer.  It's hard for me to get in there since they close at 4:30 and that's about the same time I get home.

You didn't put any tape or reuse any supplies that might have made them bump it to priority right? I think you just need to take it in and add the additional postage. I would take it in just to tell them that the PO person weighed it said it was fine as is. Have them weigh it, and put a meter stamp (even if it is just a zero) on it to show they had it in their hands already.

take it to the post office and ask them what it is supposed to be and add the extra postage.  for that small of an amount it would have had to be a very small very light book.  You shouldn't have to pay for all of the postage again just the difference you need

That depends on how far it went before they returned it. If it got at least half way they would have canceled the stamps and you will have to buy more. I know this cause I had a package returned to me this summer. I forgot to put the line with the zip code on the address label. Since it got halfway there before anyone realized it I had to  pay for the postage again.
