I have a Nook and have been downloading free books to get the feel of it.  So, I go on and get so excited to see a free book, download it and find out it is only a short story of 12 pages!  Ugh!  I really don't want to download short stories.  They don't show pages, just file size.  Does anyone know the typical file size for an average length book?

Want a Big book download the Bible its way over 1000 pages!!   IF you enjoy the book why does length matter?  Pages on a eReader are different ...depending on your settings!  Larger the print the More pages!

Not sure if this help, but I took a look at all of the book sizes that I have downloaded.  In my inventory, it appears that it could be from 300 KB and up for the complete books that I have.

Generally in the product details it will tell you the length of the paper book and most of the time you'll see there or in the reviews whether it's a short story.

Size of book can vary if there are a lot of photographs or illustrations, too. For example, Tony Blair's new book about his time as Britain's PM is more than 30,000 KB at 720 pages. I'd be willing to bet that there are pages and pages of photographs. Water for Elephants, straight prose, runs 3430 KB for about 300 pages. In contrast, Jodi Picoult's recent short story (on Kindle) is 99 KB for 43 pages. I see a Nook short story, Dream Catcher, is 82 KB and Wedding Day is 67 KB.

When the book has been published only electronically, then there's no paper book to guide you. You'll get a feel for the proper size as you go along.

At least this book was free, and you didn't shell out hard-earned money for a 12 page story.

I hope this helps.

Edit to correct a number.

I think it depends on which format they come in as well. Different formats seem to vary the file size.

I've notice that same thing and am paying more attention to what is offered.  I really don't like short stories, so I try to read the description and the reviews carefully.

Thanks everyone.  I posted this, forgot to "watch" it, then proceeded to forget I asked.  Ugh.  I'm doing some free book shopping tonight so I'll see if I can figure out with what everyone said.  Some reviews are very clear that it's a short story, but not all.  I really did not think books had much in the way of pictures, but I can see how that could really skew a file size if there were some maps or something drawn in.
