Subject: My book weighs 39 pounds???

PBS is reminding me that I need to mail a book, but none of the three options will let me print. I can't mail the book if I don't know where to send it. Even the 'option' to click if you can't print from the regular choices doesn't work. This has been going on for two days now.

The 'Print' page says my book weighs a little over 39 pounds (actually it weighs 6.5 ounces). When I change the weight, nothing happens. The calculations remain at 0.00 no matter which option I choose. Help! Is there any way I can find the name and address to send the book to so I can hand-address it?

from the Help Center:

If you cannot (or do not wish to) print the wrapper, you may hand-write the address on your package. You will need to access the address from the request for the book on your My Account page, just the same way you would begin if you were going to print it; once you are viewing it (either in .pdf format downloaded to your computer, or in a webpage using the backup wrapper link), instead of printing it you can copy it onto your package.  If you choose to hand-write the address to send a book, PBS Delivery Confirmation cannot be used for that shipment.

Here is how to get the address:

  • Click on the request for the book.
  • The Wrapper Settings page will come up.
    • Choose the orientation (layout) of your wrapper
    • Do not click to add Postage or PBS Delivery Confirmation to the wrapper.  You will not be able to use Printable Postage or PBS-DC if you are hand-printing your address (the electronic postage and DC barcode cannot be generated by hand).
    • Scroll down and click .
      • The .pdf file will download to your computer
      • Open it and copy the address from there.
      • If you are unable to download the .pdf wrapper, you should disable your browser's popup blocker (in Firefox, you can select to allow popups from paperbackswap.com)
      • If your browser is set to accept popups from PBS and you are still not able to download, you should try disabling your antivirus/firewall software (or you can simply use the backup wrapper link as below).
      • If you are able to download the .pdf but cannot open it, you should get a new copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
    • If the Print Wrapper Now button does not work, click for the backup wrapper.
      • You will be taken to a printable form of the address on a new webpage
      • You can hand-copy this.

If you choose to hand-write the address on your package:

  • Please include the Request ID# as part of your return address
    • this is not crucial, but it helps us locate the request if you need to communicate with us about it.
  • Be sure to mark your package conspicuously MEDIA MAIL if that is the rate you are using to mail it.
    • If your package weighs less than 6 ounces, it will be less expensive to send First-Class.

If you try the above and are still stuck, it's time to write R&R. Click on the "Contact Us" link at the bottom of this page.

Larry, if you haven't gotten it to work by now, you might try sending the requestor a pm to get their address and then  be sure and let PBS know what happened so that they can get it set to "mailed" for you.

I'm having the same problem as Larry.  I have two books to ship together.  It shows they weigh 140 pounds.  I can't change it. When I try to print, nothing.  The first time, I clicked to use delivery confirmation and it charged me .27 cents, but never actually showed up on the page like it normally does.  Now, each time I try, I get an "error on page" reading at the bottom of the webpage.   I've tried with DC, without DC, alternate wrapper, etc. - doesn't matter - still nothing.

I don't know what else to try, but will PM the requester and see if I can find where to mail.    However, any other help would be appreciated!  Thanks, Rhonda

Thanks, Mary J. and Rhondas. I had already tried all the options you mention above, but nothing will bring up the printable address page. I don't even get an 'error' page. Even disabled the firewall, and tried three different browsers. I've PMd the requestor and will send a note to R&R.

Problem solved, and quickly. I quote from R&R:

"Believe it or not the problem was a missing
decimal point in the database record of the book's
dimensions, which made the weight really bizarre!
Try it now; it should work."

....and it did!

Computers! Ya gotta love them, can't live without them, but if the person at the keyboard doesn't do their job right, sometimes, they leave you with a boat anchor!!! Glad that's all fixed for you!
