I'm new to the site but have already shipped 7 books!  I better get some back!!

my question is this, a request for one of my books states:

Thank you for sharing your books! I would prefer not to receive books with Bookcrossing labels on front or back covers. Inside the book is fine.

Please do not send books that are stained or dirty or highlighted/underlined. These books should not be included in your inventory, as specified by the Condition Guidelines at http://www.paperbackswap.com/help/search.php?terms=condition.

Bookcrossing?  What is that?  and why would I do that for a book I'm giving away.  Also, the book should not be in my inventory?  What do they mean?  Do they mean never send stained or damaged books?  I'm OK with that.  I wouldn't send nor want to recieve one.

Welcome Steve!  You'll get plenty of books.

BookCrossing.com is a website unaffiliated with PBS. Bookcrossing books often have stamps or stickers on them, with their Bookcrossing registration numbers.  Some people like to track where been over time.  Like if they give it to a friend, who gives it to a friend, where does it end up?  I don't really understand.  Bookcrossing books are allowed at PBS but some members don't want bookcrossing books because some people go a little crazy with stickers with the number on it.

As for the stained or dirty book part, this person is just reminding you that the book needs to meet the PBS posting guidelines, which it must do whether they remind you or not.  Some people feel that they are less likely to get unpostable books this way.  Some people dislike the practice of reminding people in RCs.

So, if the book meets PBS guidelines and doesn't have any bookcrossing stickers on the front or back cover you are good to go!

Bookcrossing is a thing people join where they stick stickers on a book and leave it to be found in public places in the hopes that other people will find the book and log onto the site so the book can be tracked.  If you don't have any such stickers on the outside of the book you should be ok.  Sometimes you get them with a sticker or two and there are other overzealous bookcrossing members who put them all over the book which can make it kind of ugly.  I think that is what the person with the condition is trying to avoid.

With the inventory statement they are just saying please don't send them unpostable books.  Kind of a strange way of saying "don't send me unpostables since they shouldn't be posted to your shelf anyway if they don't meet guidelines".

Hope that helps.  Welcome to PBS and happy swapping!

Steve--

Welcome to PBS!  It isn't unusual for new members to ship a bunch of books out at first, as their "unique" titles get snatched up by waiting members, particularly with shelves like yours which have a nice mix of genres and authors.

You might find it helpful to review the PBS Condition Guidelines, which are more strict than some other book swapping sites, so the comments about dirt/highlighting will have some context.  Those guidelines are here: www.paperbackswap.com/help/help_item.php?id=205

Cheers,

Catt
