Probably the members who post their books without anything more than the required info will not be reading the forums, but I do wish there was some way to persuade them that taking a couple of minutes more on their book description would be more likely to get their books requested. Example: in today's Daily Digest, there's one that interests me: Cat Lover's Treasury, a hardback. When I clicked on the title, that's all the description there is - no publisher or publication date. When I clicked on Buy from Amazon, I got Page Not Found. I'm supposing that most PBS members would be reluctant to risk a credit on a book with so many unknowns. Several times a week, I see books listed like this, and can always persuade myself not to request them, so perhaps other members have the same response.

Well, I did a little looking and found a cover image(very cute) of the 2008 edition on Amazon, but no description. Since I was looking for a 'cat' book for my sister's birthday I went ahead and ordered it.LOL Will edit and add the cover image and description once I get it. I have a dust jacket RC for hardcovers so that info should be available.

In a general way, if I am really intrigued by the name of a faceless/descriptionless book I just 'order' it then go to order more from member and PM to ask for a description. I don't finish ordering at that time and if I like the description I have the book info in my PM.  I must say I have only had a 50/50 response to this method.

Once I discovered the cover image/data editing feature I added info on every book in my inventory and continue to do that with every book I get my hands on. My DH says that I'm done organizing the family and now I'm organizing the world.

For books that have an ISBN, I usually enter a bunch at a time under the "list multiple books" option. I've never considered checking to see if any book I've listed has a description or not. Something to think about, especially on some of the more obscure titles I pick up from the FOL bag sales.

If they have a full ISBN# you can update the info yourself.

Margaret and Mary, Thanks so much for the info. You prompted me do a little bit of looking around. If you go to member tools and choose edit book info you can put different info in. If a book already has a description, but you can improve it, are we allowed too? Or is this just for books with no description? Thanks, Lori

Debra,   I also have tried the grab bag method of ordering an unknown book and it's usually not worth the credit. I'm learning!  Adding info is is a great way to increase orderability, just didn't realize we could do it.

You can add whatever info you think it needs.  It's easier on the data edit team if you add as much info as you can at once.  When I do an edit I look for everythign I can find that's missing.

Whenever I receive a book that does not have a description or even when I request it -- because I've usually already gone to the trouble of finding a book description to see if it is something I want to read, I will add it so that when I have read the book and repost it, the book description is already there. It definitely increases your chances of having the book requested from you, and even more so if you will add a review after you have read the book.

We cannot change the binding.  I try and leave the information source in the comments box.  The book data volunteers review every edit.  If we add all the source info, the updating goes much quicker.

(Poor editing.)

Margaret, you might start with your own bookshelf -- you've got a number of books posted that lack descriptions.  A number of PBS members volunteer their time to edit that sort of data, and you are welcome to join us -- it is a task that will never be finished. ;-)
