I've received three books in the past couple of days, and marked them all received.  Two of these three books now appear on my bookshelf, with a green check and a red circle/slash on top of that.    What's the meaning of that?

I'd like to just remove them from my shelf, as I haven't posted them and I don't intend to post them any time soon, but I wonder why they are there to begin with, and why the third one isn't.

What it's done is add the books to your TBR (or "hold") pile, which is "housed" on the same list as your bookshelf.  If you go to your bookshelf you can further divide it to only posted books in one of the drop down boxes at the top.

If you don't want it to appear at all on that page, then as you're receiving the book uncheck the box that says it's adding it to your TBR pile. Then it won't appear.

I was wondering about this also, which got me to thinking, when a book is on your bookshelf on hold, is it moving up the FIFO line, or does it not move up until you unhold it?

No, the book doesn't move up in FIFO. It's not actually in the system until you unhold it. I always just click to remove it from my shelf, but i do put it on my TBR pile and re-post the book from there.

Oh, and I forgot to add, you can just hover your mouse over any of the symbols and it will tell you what they are. The one you described just means it's on hold and not really on your shelf.

I have no idea why the third one didn't get posted to your "hold" pile. Did you unclick the box as you were receiving the book?

To remove it now, you just do it the same way you remove a book from your shelf. Click the box and then hit delete.

I actually don't put books on my TBR pile, and my books go onto the Bookshelf as "hold" - I like the feature, because you can see what is wish listed from there.

So, does that mean that if a book on your bookshelf is wish-listed, that shows up on your shelf?  How is that indicated? (I guess none of mine are!).

And if a book on your shelf is indicated as wish-listed, I assume you would get a request in FIFO order - so that if there were only one wisher, your book might not be requested?

There's a pull down menu when I go to "My Bookshelf"

One option is "currently posted" (or words to that effect)

Another Option is "on hold"

And a third is "all books" - on all books, you can tell which ones are currently posted as they have a green checkmark next to them.

When you are looking at the ones that are not posted - either just those on hold, or all of your books - the books that are on someone else's wish list have a red W next to them. If they are on someone's Wish List on automatic request, there is a Green W with a small A next to it.

Actually I think you want to uncheck the box that says something about placing the book on the bookshelf. The TBR pile is a separate box to check or uncheck. And the TBR list shows up under my lists.

babsscifi is correct.  When you log a book as received you have two decisions to make.

1.) Do you want it to show up in your TBR list?  There is a check box for this.  Leaving the checkmark there will automatically put the book on your TBR list.

2.)Then on the survey screen there is a dialog right in the middle that asks if you want to delete this book from your bookshelf.  The default is "No".  If you do  want it deleted from your bookshelf, just change the dialog to read "Yes".

Right, it's not an either/or thing...you can put the book on your TBR (which also shows what is wishlisted) and on your bookshelf on hold if you want to...doing one won't prevent you from doing the other. Either one of those options will also keep the "footprint" tracking intact, so you can see where the book has been within the PBS trading system.
