My niece loves this series and is an avid reader. She loves books which have animals as the main characters (can also include humans). She is going to be 13 so she can handle "older" books as well (I would prefer no "adult" books but Young adult vs children/teen is fine). I read paranormal and historical fiction so I have no clue what to get her. Any help from anyone please?

She should try the Redwall series. It's a great one :) Here's the first book

it is kind of a long series, but worth it :)

I bet she would like Percy Jackson and the Olympians - 5 of them.  Tolkien's Hobbit and even LORD would not be over her head - little to no graphic violence, no sex.  The Septimus Heap series, 5 so far, all stand alones.  There's Dianna Wynn Jones for more  magical stuff, if she likes that.  My 12 year old grandson has enjoyed all of the above and he loved the Warriors too.

Margaret, I was thinking of the Percy Jackson books as well. I'll have to look into those books!

If she like magical creatures I highly recommend the Fablehaven books by Brandon Mull.  Also, Erin Hunter has a newer series about a series of three bears, The Seekers.  If she hasn't tried those that might be a good way to go.

Also, if she likes animals try the Immortals Quartet by Tamora Pierce.  The first one is Wild Magic

Michelle, listening to some Irish music this morning reminded me of another really wonderful book,  set in Ireland with lots of Celtic mythological references: The Hounds of the Morrigan by Pat O'Shea, it's one of the best things I have ever read and I'm only sorry she never wrote anything else.  It's big but goes fast, two great kids and several intelligent animals, the hounds themselves are funny and the witches/Morrigan are a riot.  There are several copies available here with helpful reviews.

I think your neice would enjoy the Percy Jackson series.
