Hi I have had a problem recently with getting books. I always send out with the printable postage from this site and have not problem with books getting there quickly..and if I have ordered any that have tracking the books are getting here but recently I have had one book never make it to me and now one has been in the mail since 1/23 and they did not use tracking...it makes me so crazy as these are books that are wishlisted for long periods of time before I get them offered to me.

So I was wondering if others have noticed this with their mailings? If this book does not show up I am calling my post office but there is not much they can do. They are a small site and I am on a rural route and I know I have a new lady but she seems to be working out ok.

Thanks Tina

Unfortunately Tina, without tracking there is nothing to be done except speculation.  No point in calling your PO without a DC or tracking number, there's nothing they can do for you.

And it's what, maybe two weeks?  You are still well within the travel time frame.  PBS allows 26 days until the book is delcared lost in the lower 48, and sometimes USPS uses most of that window.   Although many books arrive in less than 14 days, it's not unusual for Media Mail to take longer...especially during winter or other times of severe weather.  And occasionally, the book never actually makes it into the mail...RL happens and so do member emergencies.

Again, without tracking...try to be patient and see what happens.  IF the book still has not arrived within a couple days of going lost (or just after), it is not inappropriate to pm and (politely) ask the sender if there was a mailing delay and let them know the book has not arrived....that you are still watching, and will be sure to mark it received if/when it does arrive.  Sometimes that will trigger some interesting information (I had a couple of those recently).

I have long suspected a link between the lack of e-DC and non-delivery. Since switching to exclusively using e-DC on outgoing shipments, my "Lost in the Mail" stat has dropped to virtually zero. (The last legitimate one was two years ago.) On the inbound side of my coin, every "Lost in the Mail" transaction I've reported since 2007 has been a book shipped without any kind of tracking. Since I prefer to think that  PBS members are honest folks and are not stealing books, that leaves something in the way the mail is handled. After some discussion with my local Postmaster, we've come to the conclusion that it's a factor of the mail having to be scanned at every stage of its shipment. There's much less chance of an item getting lost, when it's bar codes need to be scanned - often manually with a hand-held device.

As to your particular issue, I agree that there's not much you can do if there's no tracking involved, and with the weather and other crap the USPS is dealing with right now, two weeks really isn't long enough to give up hope on a Media Mail parcel. OTOH, other than the lost time off your Wish List, you lose nothing, since your credit(s) will be returned to you when the system accepts your "Lost in the Mail" report. And, you'll be returned to the head of the wait list for those books, as well.

i rarely use DC so that's not the issue. My issue is with anything coming or going to California-- seems those packages take 3 weeks no matter which part of the state is involved.

None of the books I've sent has ever gone lost and I've never used tracking. On the other hand, I was just surprised today to receive a book with tracking that had gone lost in December. I had given up on it and of course it's back on my WL, so I need to go to my transaction archive and log it in.

I have never used tracking on more than a half dozen books that were ordered from me.  In my five plus years here I've had TWO books go lost!!  That's the norm for me!
