Rachel Porter, a Fish and Wildlife agent finds herself in West Texas. In this desolate environment she works hard to preserve wildlife and herself. This book is more serious than Speart's other Rachel Porter mysteries. Rachel Porter is more developed as a character and takes on more threatening cases. But she still maintains her big city sass even in the deserts of the southwest.
