I want to get a book to be a keeper so I was going to buy it.  On Amazon there's more than one Kindle version.  One is very inexpensive and another is not that expensive but it is more.  The less expensive one has 224 pages and the more expensive has 223 pages.

What would you say is the better way to go?  As I say I do want to keep the book so I don't want something from a library for this one.

Does it say what the differences between the two kindle versions? Sometimes one will come with illustrations that another might not come with. Or maybe it's a duplicate listing and they don't realize it.

You'd be able to keep either one you buy.

I'll have to check it out.  I didn't see a difference between the books.  But I didn't know what to look for either.  Guess the less expensive is the way to go.

Okay this is the less expensive versions

  • Format: Kindle Edition
  • File Size: 446 KB
  • Print Length: 224 pages
  • Publisher: MobileReference

  This is the more expensive.

  • Format: Kindle Edition
  • File Size: 223 KB
  • Print Length: 124 pages
  • Publisher: ebooksonthe.net

Hmm, that's quite a difference in page numbers. Is it a classic book? I've seen a few classics have different versions and very different page numbers, depending on the edition (children's or early reader's edition vs original edition). Also, it might include extra footnotes or introduction or glossary, etc? I'd go with the bigger one to make sure I wasn't jipped on parts of it, probably.

If it is in the Public Domain, you shouldn't have to pay anything for it. There are free places to find those. The only reason to pay for PD books would be for the illustrations to be included that other copies don't have.

Worth checking out if you think it's past copyright.

The book is The Mysterious Affair at Styles by Agatha Christie.  I want it as a keeper.  I've run out of room for more books and actually thinking of moving to something smaller.  I may get all of the series eventually.

The difference is the publisher.  I'm actually going with the less expensive at 89 cents but seems to be the better edition.  I'm getting the Kindle today and it'll be preloaded.  Where's that darn UPS man just because he's normally here by 2 doesn't mean he can't be here early for once!  I'm anxious can you tell?

You can get this one free, as it's in the public domain. You can get a free copy in various formats at...

Manybooks.net

But it's missing the original illustrations.

I don't know what you mean as "A Keeper", since you can keep all of the books you buy, just not the library loans or the loans between lendable books. If you mean you want a copy with illustrations, then make sure any copy you pay for has them first. Otherwise, the free copy should be just as good.

Geri, that's the 25th most downloaded book at Project Gutenberg!   They DO have the download for Kindle - it does say 'no images', but are there any in the book?  So, probably all you would be missing is the cover image.  Unless you specifically want your book to start with that, is it worth paying for?  You already have (how many of)  those images on your computer for all the edits you've done!  Can you download those to your Kindle (do you care?)?

Thanks Anna.  I don't care about images so I'm checking out the free sites.  While editing I've found that PBS as 161 different ISBNs for this title.  I've read it more than once but doing the edits I want to read it again. :)

Congratulations Geri!  I never thought I would enjoy a e-reader, but it gives you another reading alternative.

I think it got caught in the snow storm!  It was supposed to be here yesterday.  I managed to track it, it's in Michigan at noon and then... gone!

Sniffle, no Kindle yet!  I think it's forced to walk from Ann Arbor to Macomb.  Quite a trek believe me!

Gotta share!  Thanks to Robin K. I called Amazon about my Kindle.  Get ready for it... it's lost in the mail!  They apologized profusely and are sending out another today and promise that I'll have it tomorrow if that's acceptable!  Terrific service, I've never had to contact Amazon before and the experience was pleasant.  Not just because they sending another shipment, just nice people that made an effort to find the problem and fix it.
