A look into the world of poverty, drug abuse, child neglect, a broken welfare system, and the resiliancy of a child. Told, obviously from the vantage point of an educated adult, but at the same time through the eyes of the child who experienced the unrelenting discouragement of poverty and neglect.

As depressing as the bulk of this story is, it is also one of the most uplifting things I've read a long while. How a child can forgive and love those who, through their addictions and wasted lives have subjected her and her sister to a wasted and neglected childhood is a miracle. Liz Murray doesn't excuse her neglectful parents, but she doesn't demonize them either.

This book has earned a place on my list of books that has left a positive lasting impression.

The best memoir that I've read in quite sometime. A must read especially for someone down on their luck and believing there is no way out. A remarkable story of determination and courage.
