Although it's a sequel to "Bitter is the New Black" I read this one first, and am glad I did so. It's the more approachable, for lack of a better term, of the two; you won't miss much of the couple's previous history, if that's a concern.

This book was a last minute addition to the tote bag for my trip to Scotland. I'm always afraid I will get stuck on an extremely long plane ride (and going to Scotland definitely counts as LONG) with crappy books. This book completely took that fear away. Let's just say that I nearly missed boarding my connecting flight in Newark, NJ because I was so engrossed in this book. I couldn't put it down. I loved the author's sarcastic wit and humor throughout the whole book.

I've never read this author before and I am so glad I found this one and will be hunting for all of her books.

I thought Bitter is the New Black (her first book) was better. This was a little harder for me to like, and seemed a bit more obnoxious.

I completely loved this book, just as much as Bitter. I found Jen to be as sharp and funny as ever, and the story was engaging - even without the struggle of being jobless that made her human in the first book. If you enjoy sarcasm and wit from an outspoken girlfriend, you will likely enjoy this memoir.

I adore David Sedaris's earlier books (unfortunately, he seems to have gotten more maudlin & less funny with age) and loved this one for the same reason: that clever way of finding humor in the general stupidity of people. Like Sedaris, Jen Lancaster is laugh out loud funny in parts, thanks to a wickedly delish mix of being a smartass, saying the un politically-correct but funny thing, and poking endless fun at her own expense - and she's pretty merciless. But the fact she makes as much fun of herself as she does everyone else's foibles makes her that endearing, wacky, and outrageous best friend we all wish we had.

Oh my goodness! This book is hysterical. The only thing is, if half the things she talks about in this book are true, I feel really guilty about getting her books here on PBS rather than helping her out of what she seems to think is abject poverty by buying them new!

I found myself wanting to skip chapters because she was getting to be annoying. Kind of like that friend you have that you don't really want to answer the phone when you see she's calling. I already have Such a Pretty Fat so will continue on to read that one but if I didn't have it I probably wouldn't bother. There are much funnier memoir authors out there- sorry Jen!

In the first book, "Bitter is the New Black," Jen is fired from her $100K+ job after a lifetime of indulgences. With this one, the second book from Jen, you get the calmed-down version of Jen. And it's MUCH better! Jen's "arguments" with Fletch are hysterical! I use quotes because I don't think you can argue about the merits of Don Knotts. Really? I understand "The Incredible Mr. Limpit" is a good movie but not (to quote) The. Best. Movie. Ever! I argued this point successfully with a film teacher regarding "Citizen Kane." How can you say something is the best anything when time moves forward and we can't predict the future so ... how can something be the best? But if you use the words SO FAR, then it works. So far (heh), this book has been the best!

I did not expect to like this book, but Lancaster had me reading passages out loud to my husband, and that's always a sign that I'm enjoying what I'm reading! Very sarcastic, so if you're not a fan of that kind of humor, don't bother, but if you don't mind a pretty sharp wit, I don't think you'll be disappointed with this!

When I read her books I feel like I'm having drinks with a best friend. Jen Lancaster makes me laugh so hard my stomach hurts. People say she's a bitch...but then why are there 400 people on paperbackswap waiting in line for her books? We can all relate to thinking those nasty thoughts, but we don't have the balls to publish them, and that's what makes her hysterical. Hope there are many more to come!

I read Bright Lights after reading Bitter is the New Black and Such a Pretty Fat. For some reason that I can't quite put into words, I liked the other two just a wee bit more. But really, that's splitting hairs as--if I could find a way--I'd make Jen Lancaster be my new best friend. And no, it isn't necessary to read them in order. In the PBS world that's not always possible, hence my reading them out of chronological order. But I had a few "Ohhhh, now I get it" moments reading this one. Nothing that made me cranky or anything.

Anyway, I just can't gush enough about Jen's ability to write what we're thinking or wishing we could say, but writing it with infinitely more wit and sarcasm. She has really got it. I cannot wait for her next book, Pretty in Plaid. Because she seems to imply that having books on the NY Times Bestseller list does not make one filthy rich, I just may have to actually buy the next one.

I found myself laughing out loud a lot while reading this book! I'm not a city dweller, nor have I watched Sex and the City so I could not appreciate the author's comparisons of real life in the city to the show. The second book by Jen Lancaster, while different, is every bit as funny as the first. With a more upbeat tone (Jen begins to find her way, thus not as heaving on the unemployment stories) this book delivers laughs from cover to cover!

I have never read a Jen Lancaster book, and I did enjoy this one. I didn't know to expect that it was basically a "diary" of her life as an unemployed/writer. I am not quite done with the book, so that means its not quite as good as other books I've read, as, to me, its not a "can't put it down" kind of book. It is funny, but she makes herself out to be fairly unintelligent, which doesn't go along with the fact that she used to be a top executive, and she recently wrote a book. It is worth reading, just probably not my style. It was more a diary than a story, in my opinion.

This sequel to "Bitter is the New Black" is a hilarious look at Jen's life as she officially becomes a Writer (with a capital W), yet is still waiting for the check from her first book. Bright Light is about the day to day life of Jen Lancaster, a writer living in Chicago trying to write a book. Throughout the book Jen deals with temp jobs, the dreaded annual Dr. visit and searching the city for a new place to live.

None of these events seem overly interesting but Lancaster is able to put her own comic light on things and you'll be laughing all the way through. If you're looking for a good laugh I suggest this one.

If you like sarcastic, witty humor you will love Jen Lancaster's books. She is always self-deprecating as she tells the story of her life in Chicago and how she goes from riches to rags (sort of) and how her husband Fletch just goes along for the ride. But be forewarned - if you like her humor she's like eating M&M's you can't stop at just one!

I liked this one better than Bitter is the New Black, although they are both so very funny! This is written in a very accessible essay format - you don't need to read the first book to understand what's going on in this one. If you like Laurie Notaro's books, you'll like this author too. Very snarky and wonderfully hilarious! I'm looking forward to her next book!!

I thought this was a great follow up to Bitter is the New Black. Jen Lancaster really has a way of describing typical mundane situations that have you trying to stifle your laughter in public places. Maybe her cynical, snarky tone is not for everyone, but for me, I cannot get enough of it. Reading her books makes me feel like I am not the only one out there in the world who gets annoyed by idiot neighbors and day-to-day irritations throughout the course of the day!

Picking up this book after a stressful day at work was better stress-relief than yoga. And her rant on Rachael Ray will probably remain one of the funniest things I've ever read in print.

Hilarious! Very clever, with multiple laugh-out-loud entries.

I enjoyed this book FAR more than this author's first effort ("Bitter is the New Black"). It seems that in "Bright Lights", Lancaster found more to say and a funnier way in which to say it. I'm glad I didn't give up on Jen Lancaster's writing and I'm looking forward to reading her latest memoir.

This is my second Jen Lancaster book, and I enjoyed it even more than the first one (Bitter Is the New Black). A rollicking memoir by a very funny but bitchy lady, Bright Lights, Big Ass is a bit more free-wheeling than her first memoir, and I think it suits her material and style better. And what style is that? Smart-assessedness mixed with lots of footnotes combined with superiority and leavened with a smidge of humility. It amazes me that someone who was born in the same year as me (1967) has been able to churn out at least four memoirs, all of which have more than 300 pages. Jen Lancaster can seemingly write about anythingâthe thrills and horrors of riding public transportation, the travails of dog ownership, neighbors, house-huntingâand make it fun to read about. It is also fun to read a memoir that is light and funny and is not about sad and disturbing stories of alcoholism or child abuse. Consider it memoir lite.

Excerpt about the appeal of Ikea: I don't care how rich or poor you are, the draw of purchasing twelve hundred tea lights for thirty-seven cents is too great for anyone to resist.

Kind of like David Sedaris meets Elizabeth Wurtzel, Jen Lancaster uses "Bright Lights, Big Ass" as a showcase for her generally hilarious, brutally honest and raucous take on life in every aspect. I truly love humor essay style writing, so I could be biased.

A note to the faint of heart: If the mild profanity in the title of this book turns you off, you likely WON'T appreciate its contents. If, however, you love people who tell it like it is (and do so from a viewpoint they've spent a lifetime cultivating)? You'll love this book.

I'm glad I read it and have sought out other stories cultivated in Jennsylvania (read the book). In my view? This is her best collection.
