The rebellious son of the Earl of Atwick, Carson Fairfax has been living in exile in Denver, running a gambling hall and enjoying a reputation as a society playboy. Now, his mother is coming to spend the Christmas season with him, and suddenly, Carson needs a respectable bride, for a month's time-someone like the cirtuous and beautiful Katherine Tucker.

Katherine doesn't know whether to be outraged or merely astonished that the rakish Carson Fairfax has asked her to be his bride in a marriage of convenience. After all, she's been petitioning to close that notorious den of his for some time. Still, she is in need of financial security, and so she agrees under one condition: Carson must sell his beloved gambling hall first.

What begins as a simple ruse quickly becomes a game of hearts. For Katherine holds cards that Carson could never foresee, and soon the spirit of Christmas is bringing two unlikely people toward a love that is strongerm richer, and brighter than gold...
