Livingstone and the Missionary Work in South Africa. HENRY M. STANLEY, M. P., was a convert to the excellence and magnitude of the labors of the missionaries in Africa by association with Dr. David Livingstone; and the explorations by Stanley have greatly enlarged the field of usefulness opened by the man he rescued from destitution, and who became his teacher and his example of dutiful life, unselfish and simple. The life of Livingstone was sublime at its close in the instruction it gave and the achievements that resulted, imparted by its logic and its lessons. Before his inspiration by , Livingstone the daring explorer, who succored Earlier Opin- him, was not partial to the missionaries who were ion of Mis- in the African field. We find in missionary litera- sionary ture, presented to show the temper of Stanley when he first distinguished himself in the exploration of Africa, this extract of his writings in 1871 : "The bishop in crimson robe and with sacerdotal title, missionary-bishop of Central Africa -- why so named I cannot conceive -- has reached the bourne of aspiring priesthood, and is consequently ineffably happy. But this high-church, very high-church prelate, stalking in robe of office and queerest of head-dresses through the streets, is the most ridiculous sight outside of a clown-show.
